Delta has now killed two wild Ptarmigan. Nolan gets credit for pointing the birds and holding steady while Tom walked in front of Nolan and positioned Delta in a good spot to take off after the birds once they flushed. The three are a good team.

Flying by Rain

It also gave Tom a chance to gain some more hours in the 172. So we packed our dinner and headed north. We were able to fly around most of the rain. The it cleared off into a beautiful tundra evening.
Tom walked Delta through the neighborhood on the way to the open tundra to train her with a live pheasant. Kids throughout the neighborhood followed us out onto the tundra to watch. Tom let the kids hold Delta too. This is the first falconry bird Bethel has ever seen.
The Salmon Berries are good this year. We had 1 sunny day in the last 3 weeks. On that day Tom and I went for a berry picking flight. Tom practiced touch and go landings at the airstrip in Kwethluk while I gathered. These made a great jam.
Sean, Britton, Quiinn and Oona made the big trip to Bethel in July. It was great to have time to visit with the gang. It did rain most of the time, but we got out for a camp out on the Gweek River and had a lot great time to play with the kids.
One my summer highlights is Kayaking. I am always happy to paddle an old haunt in Wisconsin. I miss the Wednesday night paddling crew. The lake was rocking on the day Chris and I planned to paddle. We had a great lunch at Meyers beach and then headed toward the warm calm waters of Bark Bay.
I met up with the WOW crew in Bayfield on Wednesday night too.Thunderstorms motivated us to become women in water and hit the hot tub in Bayfield. We followed our salt water soak with a tasty dinner at Maggie’s.
Quinn and I bought some worms headed down Old Grade Road to Day Lake. When we got there signs indicated there was a forest fire ahead. We could smell the charred wood and see small ground fires still burning. But that didn’t stop us from fishing from the boat dock.
The Saturday Farmer’s Market is always a great event in Ashland. This year it is even greater because Britton and Sean have a stand for their Deep Roots Farm. Britton is making homemade tortillas and breakfast burritos. The gang is selling produce from the farm and family handicrafts too.
