BRWA's Culvert Program Education

In addition to collecting and analyzing data, the BRWA is working to educate local decision makers about the effects road stream crossings have on our fish and streams.

Here's how:
 
All town officials are sent quarterly BRWA newsletters. Our newsletters contain regular Culvert Program updates that describe the benefits of fish friendly culvert installation. 

We created and posted a culvert display in each town hall for a period of two months that describes the importance of fish passage and the concerns with increased sediment delivery at road stream crossings.

We hosted town boards and road crews at a chili and apple pie lunch to describe our efforts in inventory of road stream crossings, to learn about problem culverts in their respective jurisdictions and to strengthen the working relationship.

BRWA representatives have attended town board meetings to offer support for fish friendly road work.

We will condense our 170-page Needs Assessment into town-specific short sheets that summarize our priority list within township boundaries and will meet with towns individually to determine remediation sites.

We hosted a workshop for town road crews that described the importance of fish-friendly road crossings and installation techniques to ensure fish passage.
