Super Nolan

I am having a bit of fun figuring out how to use the equipment for our project at Aropuk lake. Even figured out how to post my video to Youtube. This is going to be fun. But I am going to have mouse fingers.

The smelt run lasts for just a few days. Folks line up side by side to get their share.

Here is a good haul for one dip. It took us some time, but we learned the technique for kuskokwim smelting. You scoop them out o the current from the bank. Finding a hole along the bank helps.

Smelt Season

Smelting season marks the arrival of spring fishing. Once the ice breaks on the river, these creatures make their way upriver to spawn. They are larger than the smelt on the Great Lakes. The Yupik dry them whole and then smoke them.
